Best way to stake and/or cage tomato plants? Any pictures or diagrams?

I know this isn't rocket science, but any visual help would be appreciated. I just bought two dwarf plants and two regular-size plants (up to six or seven feet). I don't have a lot of space, so I'm hoping to go vertical.

Also, any tips on moving the plants to the soil would also be appreciated. Right now, each is about 8-10" tall.

Thanks.

if you dont have a lot of space........grow them upside down!

i dont know why people faff about with poles and canes etc, this is so simple and effective and doesnt need any ground space, its an awesome way to grow tomatoes if you are short of space

Reply:When I buy tomatoes I dig the hole rather deep, and place some sort of nutrient mix in the bottom--like Miracle-Gro soil. I bury the rootball and half of the plant itself; the stem will root too, giving the plant a real headstart. I use bamboo stakes, and secure the growing plants to them by using rings of nylons (soft, and won't cut the stem). Don't tie them off too tightly because a tight tie will constrict the flow of water to the plant. Be sure to pinch off suckers--small shoots between the main leaves and the stem. These make the plant bushy and devote nutrients to leaves, not fruit. Feed with a very weak Miracle-Gro solution every time you water, which should be often as it begins to heat up. Be sure to plant in a VERY sunny location!
Reply:I just found this site the other day, I think it will help you out a lot. It talks about all the methods of caging and the pros/cons of each method.

Best of luck!

Reply:Loop the string from pole to pole. No need to tie the plant. Just let the string go by the plant on both sides. Put the poles about a foot away from the plants.
Reply:Be sure to get the stakes/cages in before they start growing fast. It's easy to wait until the plants are too large then you'll have a devil of time getting them in place.
