Help with planting tomato plants?
yes,,,, mix bout 1\3 dirt to 2\3 potting soil ,,the dirt will help hold moisture,,potting soil alone will let the water run through too quickly,,, ,,,yes put rocks in bottom to prevent soil from leaking out,,,,i plant mine laying down,, covered up to the first leaves,,,the little hairs you see on the stems will make more roots,,,being in a pot,,you ll have to water more often,,also use a weak compost tea or manure tea or Miracle Grow in stead of pure water,,, large tomato varieties are not recommended for pots ,,,the root system will become en snarled and deter growth of the plant and fruit,,,Tommy toes ,,or mid size tomato plants are best for pots,,,
Reply:Good choice on Celebrity. It is a determinant variety, so it is suitable for planting in container. You can mix potting soil with dirt, and bury as much stem as you like because they will sprout and generate roots. Add an all-purpose slow release fertilizer in the pot when you transplant. It will provide continued feeding for your tomatoes up to three month. So you don;t have to worry about fertilizing it.... Happy gardening!
Reply:I put mine this year in Miracle Grow Potting Soil with Moisture Control. This soil helps prevent overwater by sluffing off excess water through your pots drain holes. I drilled 4 drain holes in the bottom of my flower pot, measured how deep I would need to bury the tomato plants to insure I buried 80%

of the tomato plant. I then filled in the pot with my soil, staked my tomato plant as we have alot of wind, watered well and placed in full sun. Full sun is considered at least 6 hours of sun daily. As of today I have mini tomatoes. I planted numerous varities including the big tomatoes and they are doing great. I also have mine caged as I am growing them on the patio. Good luck.
Reply:As far as the type of tomato...celebrity are determinate tomatoes..meaning..they will fruit out all at one time and ripen all at once then they are through for the season..thats all you get... I would get an indeterminate variety which will put fruit out continiously all season long...Celebrity are for people that do canning and put them away for sauces etcetera as they need.. they will die after first fruiting session..heres a link on this...

Reply:Hello! I plant my tomatos in plastic buckets.Just make sure you have a drainage hole at bottom of bucket, use half garden soil and half potting mix for best result.Stand the buckets on some bricks or stones so they can drain easily.Plant preferably against a wall or fence.Either stake each bucket individually,or as I do,put up a plastic trellis or wire netting, behind buckets. They only need to be put in soil about 3inches. Water once well, and don't overwater. then as soil dries, water again.I use Comfrey herb as a fertiliser and mulch.Very good for tomatoes. If bush tomatoes, you won't need the stakes. Good Luck!
Reply:If you plant the pot then no you don't need rocks to cover the holes. Yes you can mix dirt with potting soil. some plant part of the stem as well. even deeper than the original planting. I have never tried that personally.

I don't think using pots is good unless you are talking Pete pots. Plastic or clay pots will restrict the root growth.

Good Luck, Please remember me when picking your best answer. Thankyou
Reply:Your pot has to be at least 5 gallons. Do not use regular dirt in containers. I suggest mixing compost and potting mix. Feed with tomato food according to package directions.
