Why is adding sulfur to soil good for tomato plants ?

I was told it keeps the leaves from curling and keeps the bugs away. Truth or baloney? Does it change the taste of the tomatoes?

Why is adding sulfur to soil good for tomato plants ?
It helps the plant avoid blossom end rot.
Reply:It makes the soil more acidic, makes the plants grow better, it does help prevent some specific plant diseases, and also coincidently helps keep the bugs away. It makes the tomatoes taste better.
