When should i set out tomato plants in South Florida?

Is late February good? Any tips anybody can give me. I put them out in April last year and got no tomatoes, they burned up, and then again in September and still only have 4 tomatoes.

Late Feb./early March sounds good. Better luck this year!
Reply:Set them out after the last frost. You need to keep tomatoes well-watered. They should be watered daily. Also make sure the soil provides the essential nutrients. You can simply add any top soil and something like miracle grow for best results. Also, catepillars are probablly eating the buds before they can develop. I would try seven dust or something mild. But make sure you do things like this in the evening to avoid burning by the sun.
Reply:I don't know about Florida but a good way to start early is to put them out and make little plastic tents over the stakes. Or save your dry cleaning bags and when it is going to get too cold tie a big knot in one end and slip over stake and remove in the morning. I live in south Texas and if I had the time I would be putting mine out now. The other thing is putting a tarp over the plants in the summer to keep the direct sun off the plants. I had pretty good luck with big pots at the edge of the tarp last year. Nuttin' better than home grown tomatoes.
Reply:Mid February.
Reply:You should be able to start now. Check with your county extension agent just to be sure. The agent can also tell you what varieties perform best in your area.

I know that when we go on vacation in South Florida in April that the tomatoes have already been harvested so judging by that you'd be safe to start now.

Hope you have a good crop!
