I put 3 tomato plants in a pot a few weeks ago. how do i trim them correctly?

they are growing quite large. while i am using a large pot %26amp; am supporting them with stakes , i don't know the first thing about trimming them back correctly for best yield %26amp; not overgrowing the area that they're in. i planted 1 of each variety : cherry , grape , %26amp; either celebrity or best boy. the celebrity or best boy variety has gotten twice as large as the other 2 , %26amp; is threatening to overgrow the entire large container. the container is round %26amp; about 24 inches accross.

Celebrity and Best boy are both genetically larger than either grape or cherry. Use three seperate pots. Plant deeply to form sturdy stem. You can even remove the lower branches using small shears and plant deeper. More roots will form along the stem. As far as triming them, let them grow. Remove only some of the smaller newly forming brances from the older more established ones. These will withstand the weight of the new tomatoes as they begin to grow and produce. Feed with a reliable fertilizer especially for tomatoes. Water frequently but don't drown. Stake as needed to keep plants upright.
Reply:do not trim them stake them up so that they do not collapse from the weight of the plants. I think in the future I would not put three plants I one container unless the container was huge
Reply:You don't need to trim tomatoes, although if you want to control a little, you can pinch back some of the new growth that comes out between where the leaf and the main stem connect. Also keep it staked. I also wouldn't recommend putting 3 tomato plants into one container, as the roots really need a lot of room.
Reply:If possible try and transplant the 2 smaller plants in different pots. As far as pruning. You must most certainly pinch the suckers off. They are the small branches that start budding out between a main branch and a leaf branch...(right in the crotch of the 2 branches.) The vines need to be kept under control for better fruit production. If not pinched regularly, the plant will use all it's energy on vine production, thus having lots of healthy beautiful vines with few tomatoes.
Reply:one plant per pot

the root system will kill the plants

or in the uk use a growqbag this is a compost feed mix all you need is in the bag

the best boy is a vine type tomato plant and will grow tall 2metres

cherry and grape are bush type will grow 1 metre tall and need no pruning

you will find small yellow flowers on the best boy type

after two sets of leaves have grown pinch out the low flowers

this encourages growth further up the plant.

hope this has been helpful
