How do I stabilize my cages for my tomato plants?

My plants are getting so big they are starting to lean over. Can I still stake them or will that damage roots? Any other solutions?

It sounds like you need taller and sturdier stakes-you can continue to stake them as long as they grow and fruit--feel free to use a hefty 2 by 4 piece of wood for a stake if you can--the stakes sold in most hardware stores are pretty flimsy--continue to stake them it will be ok, happy gardening!
Reply:you will just need to do it very carefully, do it now before they get too much bigger. just slowly work the cages over them. you could try stakes if you are worried about breaking the plants.
Reply:A stake next to the cage will not hurt your plant. As suggested, next year you may want to either buy larger cages or stake them when you place the cages.
