How can I tell if I'm watering tomato plants too much?

Plants are contained in "upside down" hanging planters. Started great and are beginning to grow fruit. Ovenight one plant went totally limp. Leaves are soft, not crispy. Watering on drip system, 3x/day for about 5 minutes each. Live in Redding, CA, gets VERY hot in summer. Other plant in other container doing fine. Both get full sun. Are they getting too much water or too little? Thank you.

Wilt is a form of virus that effects many kinds of plants, tomatoes being one. This is probably the problem. If the other two plants are still healthy make sure you remove the infected plant. If you start a new plant in the same container, be sure that it has been sterilized. Usually, a solution of 1-2 TBL. of bleach in a bucket with a little dish liquid and hot water, for a few minutes is fine. Rinse well afterwards. Wilt is carried by various insects that will infect the plant. It sounds as if you have a pretty good handle on watering. Soil should never get "dry" in a container and it should never be overly wet (spongey) to the touch. Moist is the word for container grown tomatoes and most other vegetables.
Reply:watering ones a day is enough early in the morning or late in the afternoon ore early evening. even during hot summers. you may have stem rot, this is due to over watering, tomatoes don't like too much water the stems are soft.
Reply:Sounds like you may have a bacterial problem due to all of the water you are giving your tomatoes. I would reduce watering and if they do not perk up and continue to get worse, you probably have bacterial spot. Bacteria are very easily spread via water. Tomatoes are very prone to bacterial spot too and over-watering may have enhanced the process.
Reply:Not a water problem. You have wilt. Some say it's in the dirt... Others say it's in the plant. I think it's in the plant. I have lost three plants because of this.
Reply:How much water are you giveing them per day?

Dose the soil look damp when you water them?

Are the leafs looking brown or showing black spots?

These aew all things I ask people when they come to my job.

I would say if they are in contaners only water them every other day if need it. Also never water the leafs of the plant and make sure that the plant is in big enough contaner. If they are in the gound water 1st thing in the morning and put a sprinkler on them for 1/2 hour per day and check the soil the next day to make sure it was deryed out alittle the soil should never be wet or to dry . I hope this helps you and if you need more info in this you can go to http://www.ortho.com/ www.diy.com or go to your local plant nursery in your area and ask some one who knows about plants. Hope this helps you. Major spoosh hallzy
Reply:When the leaves turn soft and have a tint of yellow they are being watered too much.
Reply:I just want to say thanks for posting this question I have learned a lot
Reply:I think too much water, water once a day but water throughly
Reply:Getting to much water.
Reply:Tomatoe plants usually will turn yellow on the leaf edges if you are watering too much. A slight bit of epson salts in the ground helps in hot waether. You may also consider the temperature of the soil. I live in Iowa and have tried having plants in above ground planters. When it gets really hot here I have a hard time giving them enough water. Good luck
