What is the proper way to trim a hanging tomato plant?

I have a tomato post with over-hanging vines; as the tomatoes get ripe, I pick them. The vines are getting too long though. What is the correct way to trim them without damaging or killing the plant?

Trim some all the way back to the main, vertical branch to thin them out and for larger fruit; and trim some of the branches back to the next closest flower. Also cut off any browned or damaged leaves. I like to cut the bottom branches off also so that they are not resting on the soil......
