Does tomato plants outdoors only last one season and how long before my tomatoes turn red?

Tomatoes last many seasons. Depending on your growing climate, you can start plants at the end of winter, (no freeze of frost), have tomatoes in Spring, Summer and Fall. Depending on the variety, and your knowledge of gardening.

Reply:They till the first frost. It just takes time, for the tomatoes to turn, be patient. The wait will be worth it.
Reply:Sadly, they do only last one season, but if you plant them in five gallon buckets, you can try bringing one inside in the fall. I grow cherry tomatoes over the winter in missouri with lots of success, right next to my french doors. As for reddening, mine are beginning to redden now. Give it about a week and they should start turning.
Reply:when they are as big as you want them pick them and put then in a paper bag on your window sill, they'll ripen in a couple days..try frying some of them green ,slice them and fry them in a little butter or margarine with garlic and seasoned salt ..you might not want to see them red..and yes you only get one season

Reply:If you are in the UK there is no way you will manage to keep tomato plants over the winter, it is just too cold, and not light enough.


They are also incredibly prone to diseases of various types, and by September are usually well past their sell-by date.


If your green tomatoes haven't turned red, just strip them from the plants, and keep them in a warm place, alongside a ripe banana, the ethylene gas produced by the banana will encourage your tomatoes to ripen - but don't leave the banana so long it goes mouldy.

Reply:Tomato plants outdoors die off at the end of the season. It takes 60 - 90 days for tomatoes to bear ripe fruit depending upon the variety. For most varieties figure closer to 90.
Reply:Yes they only last one season. They should be starting to turn red now...depends how much sun they've had or will get. Some may never turn red so then you need to put them in a paper bag in a drawer and they will go red in there. Contradicts itself really, but this really works. Good luck.
Reply:You can let the seeds in a tomato dry and plant them but you will probably get what we call "tommytoes" her in the south if your plants are hybrid plants.
