If I want to plant tomato plants it would be best to plant them in May? since I live in Ohio?

Start them indoors under lights (a window sill does not have enough light for seedlings and they get leggy and weak) in early April so they are 6 to 8 weeks old when you start hardening them off. I used to plant on May 15th here in SW Ohio but the past 8 years or so there has been a cold snap between the 20th and memorial day that has caused me to plant my transplants in early June. You can plant as late as July 4th and still get ripe tomatoes in Ohio before the first frost in the fall.

I have also direct seeded them in late April and have gotten decent crops from those plants. Direct seeded plants are always healthier than transplants BTW.

May 15 is the planting day in New York. Plant them inside around April 5th.

Reply:Yes about May 15th. Start them indoors in the middle of April. Then transplant them to out of doors.
Reply:i dont know what part of ohio your from? usually the last full moon in may brings the last frost with it. so anytime after that. i live in pa between johnstown and altoona. after that full moon i put all my tomatoes and peppers in ............its the 3 rd or 4th week of may . I started my seeds at the end of feburary. my plants will be a foot to a foot and a half hi when they go in the garden I guess your buying plants somwhere? if you got seeds start them now indoors. May 20th is the last full moon I use b.b.q. skewers smooth birch and a bread bag twisty to hold plants up in there small pot.while there inside you get a bag of 100 for 79 cents
