What is the best fertilizer for tomato plants? Last year our tomatoes weren't sweet.?

I don't know if you water a lot or not but, try not to water too much. Lots of water will make your vegetables more watery .

They will have less flavor.

The flavor comes from the sugar in the plant. The less you water the more flavor your vegetables will have. When the plant begins to get dry they will put more sugar to the fruit of the plant and that will give your vegetables more flavor.

When you let the plant get a little dry the roots of the plant will follow the water down into the soil and that will make bigger and longer roots. With more roots the plant can get more nutrients from the soil.

I never water my garden unless the plants start to show a lot of stress or begin to die. Let them wait on the rain. Of course if they start to look bad then water them but as long as they look OK then let them go and your vegetables will have a lot of flavor and be sweeter.

Nitrogen, Potash and Phosphorus are essential for your soil so look for a fertilizer that has all three.

Organic matter is a must too.

Call your local Cooperative or County Extension office and ask them how to get your soil tested. Some County offices will do it free.

Your County Extension Agent will help you with your garden to get the most you can from it.

Plant a sweet variety such as sun gold or yellow pear. Those are both small "cherry" tomatoes.
Reply:Garden tone, holly tone, algoflash, manure tea

very little 1/4 the recommended rate 1/3 the feeding time s
Reply:Actually any good fertilizer for vegetables will work fine if you follow the instructions. The problem wasn't the fertilizer, it was probably the type of tomato plant you bought. Better boys have a good sweet flavor, where as beef eaters have more of a twang and more meaty. Many different types of tomato's. try plant a few varieties to see which you like the best
Reply:To grow tomato plants you need full sun. No trees around.

Its not only the fertilizer, its the development of the root structure.

Plant the tomatoes in rich soil about 10 inches deep and about 5 inches below ground level. Then as they grow back fill the plants with rich topsoil mixed with 12-12-12 fertilizer at a rate of about 3/4 cup to a five gallon pail of dirt. Mix well in a wheelbarrow.

You can even mound up the dirt around the plants to achieve even more root structure.

The key to fertilizer absorption is getting a huge root structure by planting deep then filling as above as plants grow taller. Fill on weekly basis. You will have like 5 or more inches of roots to absorb moisture and fertilizer.

Do not use 20-20-20 fertilizer. That will produce huge vines and not many tomatoes.

Do not hose spray the tomato vines, always water from the bottom, avoid wetting the foilage. And do not overwater, tomatoes like moist but not wet soil.
Reply:I think its Otho grow that has the best fertilizer for fruits, yes, tomatoes are a fruit!!!!
Reply:I grow 20 to 25 plants every year and have never fertilized. Mine taste like tomatoes are supposed to. Maybe its the type you have. Yellow na dthis new Rainbow tomatoe don't have as much acid and to me they taste bland.
Reply:I grew up with my grandpa growing vegetables. I say use organic fertilizer instead of the stuff out the store. The tomato will be sweeter if left on the bush until completely turned, but sometimes you have no choice but to pick it when it first starts turning to avoid the worms getting into it. An example of good fertilizer. Go around your area and check if anyone has goats. Get lots of goat manure and rototill it in with your dirt. Then let it sit a couple weeks to settle. My dad and i planted a garden where our goat barn used to be and picked a squash that was 13 inches long, 15 inches around. This was yellow straight-neck squash.
