I have a few antifreeze barrels available, can I cut them in 1/2, use them for tomato and bell pepper plants?

What about using one for a compost bin? Just wondering how the antifreeze might affect everything...

PLEASE DO NOT!!!!!!!!!!!

usually, the thing I hate most on answerer's is people flashing their Master Gardener badge, or some other fancy title to get their point across.

But, this time, because that idea is so frightening to me.... here goes...

I am a licensed pesticide applicator, and also a private certified Nursery and Landscape applicator.

Please believe me.

ALL barrels, plastic or steel, All leather, cotton, wool clothing.

ALL of these retain the traces of the chemicals enough to endanger your life!

Plants will systemically absorb these chemicals and traces of them will be in every bite you eat!

Please! contact your local State University or your local

Extension Service, or your State Pesticide Bureau for further information!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

please!?!?
Reply:Anti-freeze will kill a cat or a dog NO,I wouldn't plant anything edible in them, however after a good wash they might make a good pot for trees are flowers, not something you are going to eat.
Reply:A good wash with detergent and water and they are good to go in my opinion. I don't think antifreeze leaves much of a residue even when just rinsed out with water. Be sure to put some drainage holes in the bottom of your new pots!
Reply:You would have to so some serious cleaning of those barrels. Very serious cleaning. I would have rather used them for a compost bin.
Reply:The active ingredient in 'Senecot' laxative is propylene glycol (anti-freeze). If you wash them with detergent and rinse well, you should be fine. I'm honestly unsure about how it might affect the plants. RScott
