I'm growing tomato plants from seed. I have tall & spindly looking seedlings.Is this normal?

What should i do to increase roots %26amp; grow stronger stems?

I'm growing tomato plants from seed. I have tall %26amp; spindly looking seedlings.Is this normal?
Tall, spindly plants aren't getting enough light. You should have them under artificial lighting. If you already have them under artificial lighting the lighting will need to be lowered down closer to the plants.

Reply:I agree with quickrep, in addition to the light you can put a fan on them. The breeze will make the stalks stronger. They definitely need stronger/longer light. They should be getting about 14 hrs a day of strong light. Remember that when it is time to put them outside that you need to harden them. This would mean putting them outside for short periods lengthening the time over a couple of weeks. If you don't they will get sun burned, stunted and do poorly.

Reply:I used a fertilizer for mine and its fine. Yes it is normal make sure it gets water and plenty of sun. I hope I helped good luck!
Reply:Tomato plants are one of the few plants that you can put soil around the stem as it grows. This will support it and tomato stems will grow roots below the soil and get stronger.
