Upside down tomato plants?

Has anyone tried this? I was wondering if it just ends up being a mess and if they really grow.

I was thinking about planting tomatos , cucumbers and squash all in one hanger with herbs on the top.

DO you think it will work?

Upside down tomato plants?
I have grown tomatoes and cucumbers upside down in a five gallon bucket for the last couple years. I don't think gourds would work. A five gallon plastic bucket is lots cheaper than that vinyl bag for $19.95 plus shipping. I just cut a 1" hole in the bottom plus cut a cross over it for easy insertion of the roots. I plant a tomato plant in the bottom and cucumbers out holes in the sides.
Reply:I have found that tomato plants like to be planted sort of slanted (lay it sideways in the soil). You'll get a greater yield that way. I would guess that's the same concept as upside down.

Putting all those plants together would not be a good idea. At full maturity they are large plants and the yield can get awfully heavy. Plus, squash tend to grow out (as opposed to up like tomatoes and cukes) a great distance, which would impede the others.

Try doing the tomatoes in one with basil, oregano or rosemary on top to complement the flavors. You can do dill with the cucumbers. Thyme with the squash....

Really cool idea, just do them all separately.
Reply:It takes a special type of tomatoes plant, which does not get really big, I can't remember the name of the variety... I have tried once, it was cute, but did not produce a lot of tomatoes. I only had a 10" pot, so it was hard to keep it watered especially in the heat of summer. I wouldn't recommend planting tomatoes, cucumbers and squash all in one hanging basket. You could encounter several problems. Squash grows quite large. You need to consider the size of the root system for each plants, and their different watering and nutrients need. They could look cute at at first when you plant them as seedlings, then they will get big! It happens every time. I run into the same problems with my garden (and it is quite big). It always look sparse when you first plant the seedlings and end up over crowding in the end.... good luck and happy gardening!
Reply:they actually have a tomato plant called the "Topsy Turvy Tomato" and i was going to get it for my mom for Mother's Day. and its suppose to acutally help tomatoes grow because they wont fall off the viens like they would if there were rightside up. i would try it, i think it would work!!
Reply:not a great idea as it dries out very fast when fully grown.

if you have the time to water often the go for it, it works
Reply:They make planters like this at gardener supply co. I've never tried it, but I would like to try. Yes, it does work - with the appropriate planter.
Reply:I will have to ask my grandpa. He's a farmer. But I know someone who used that. They said it worked fine for them.
Reply:i have tried and it does work you just don't get many vegi's off it
