Do Cicada's eat tomato plants?????

I need to know if they are going to eat my plants before I plant them.

Do Cicada's eat tomato plants?????
A big threat to newly planted tomatoes is cutworms.

Take a small piece of newspaper ( 2" x 2") and gently roll around stem so where the stem meets the ground it would be protected from surface crawlers. This will protect them until stems are stronger.
Reply:Cicadas do feed on plant sap but generally from trees. They don't eat the plant and do very little damage. The nymphs spend a very long time (many years) underground close to their host plant (tree roots). It is very unlikely that you will find them where you plant your tomatoes.

Reply:Only every 17th year. Are you sure they are a true cicada? If so, they eat anything, mate, then crawl back in their holes and the male leaves his shell hanging in the trees.
Reply:Cicadas are only looking for places to lay their eggs when you see them on your tomato plants. Cicadas only feed on trees. They will not harm your tomatoes.
