Advise on Tomato Plants?

We live in a nice subdivision- landscaped and manicured everywhere. In May, I had some grape tomato seeding which I started in pots on our apartment balcony. They were already outgrowing their pots and I didn't have time to make a proper bed for them when we moved into the house, so just stuck them out in my flowerbeds, figuring they be finished producing sometime in late June and I'd remove them. Now in early August, they have grown into the huge ugly monsters. They are over 6 feet tall, flopping out of their cages, and the bottom leaves are all yellow, brown, and dying. However, they are loaded with tomatoes. I'm picking 8 or 10 every day, which my family is eating, and is helping keep our grocery bill down. They are also still making blooms at the tops of the plants and setting new fruit. Problem is my neighbors hate them because they are unsightly and have begun to complain and ask when I will pull them up. Do I pull them up to be a good neighbor, or wait until they finish making?

Advise on Tomato Plants?
It seems like such a shame to pull up plants that (although unsightly) are still producing fruit. Why not just apologize to the neighbors and offer them some of the tomatoes with a promise that you will be more prepared next year to locate the plants where they won't offend anyone's senses. Tell the truth, just as you did here -- you just moved in, had already started the plants, etc. I really think that since the end of the season is coming up, they might be more understanding than you think. Hmmm, maybe you could get a good salsa recipe and make up a few jars to offer with a little tag on them that offers the apology -- draw a silly picture of the gangly plant and make it from the plant!
Reply:Sounds like you are getting some good advice here. Just remember once your plants start to die back and you still have green tomatoes on them - don't throw those green tomatoes away. You can make Green Tomato Pie that tastes like Apple Pie or Green Tomato Salsa or just put the Green Tomatoes in a brown paper bag single layer in a dark cool area such as in the basement. Keep an eye on them every couple of days. The gasses they produce in the closed bags will ripen the tomatoes and you will continue to have nice red ripe tomatoes for weeks.
Reply:Arent' you supposed to pick off the dead leaves? Snip them off at least. Hope you don't live in a neighborhood that tells you what kind of garbage can to have, what house paint to use and etc. I would never live in that kind of neighborhood.
Reply:It isn't long till it will frost and I would enjoy them until the last one is gone....have you offered your neighbors a hand full.?
Reply:I'd leave them alone and get the tomatoes. Just tell them you're sorry and they won't be there next year!
Reply:try bribing your neighbors by GIVING them some of your tomatoes.
Reply:Let them finish, it is your house! Offer your neighbors a few to tomatoes to shut them up! Tell the neighbors next year you are puttingin a whole vegetable garden, corn and everything!
Reply:Leave the tomato plant until the end of the season and enjoy your tomatos. The grape cherry variety are considered an indeterminate plant and will keep growing and producing until the season is over. The heck with your neighbor, growing your own is always more beneficial. Compare the flavor of your tomatos with that of store bought which wre picked off the vines and sit in storage for up to three months before they make it to the stores produce section. Enjoy your own!
Reply:Keep picking and enjoying your tomatoes. You can take off the yellowing leaves. Also pinch out the tops to stop them from growing. Your neighbors are just envious of your good healthy fresh tomatoes. Green tomatoes will ripen in a brown paper bag especially if you put a ripe one or a banana in with them.
Reply:i would suggest that you wait until the end of the season and maybe share some with your neighbors as a peace offering and maybe they won't complain so much.
Reply:no fxck them they are just jealous
Reply:its your plant in your area let the neighbors suffer or offer them some so they dont complain...maybe their just jealous cuz u thought of it first
Reply:Some people have nothing better to do with their time and lives than ***** about what other people do. Drives me nuts. Give them some tomatoes and smile and say you couldn't bear to lose such wonderful produce. None of their business really....we live in a neighborhood with pretty restrictive covenants and nowhere does it say that the neighbors have to approve the plants you put in. They should go scratch :)
Reply:Tell your neighbors, that these are very fruitfull plants and are not prone to manicure, they will stop within the next month as late september has harvest moon and everything will start to die out for fall, they will probebly stop befor then. Offer them a few of your delicious tomatoes, and tell them they will be gone befor they know it.
