Can tomato plants easily be started indoors from seed?

Get a good potting mix from a garden center. Don't buy from Wal-Mart unless you know potting mixes. They are not all the same.

You will need a grow light. It MUST be one for flowering and fruit plants instead of foliage plants. There is a difference just like there is a difference with fertilizers. They need more than 12 hours of daylight/grow light per day. (I usually like about 14 to 15 hours.) If not, they will become spindly and weak.

Plant just below the surface and keep moist. Do not let the soil stay wet or dry out. Just moist.

After the plants have 6 or more leaves, they can be transplanted into their own pots. Keep fertilized with very light 6-12-12, or something close to this with a lower nitrogen (first) number than the other two numbers.

Plant in garden only after the threat of frost is over.

yes u can
Reply:It is a common practice, called forcing.

get some plug packs and fill them with potting soil and put the seeds in as per lable.

put them under a grow-light in a warm space. Often putting them by a window will get a drafty chill.

water and light fertilizing will help, H2O being the biggest limiting factor of any growing thing.

Plant more then you need some will fail,. Pinch off the leggy ones, if they grow too fast they will not do well, sometimes you need to cull those that grow to fast along with the stuntes ones.

when it is warm enough you gand transplant to the garden.

When my mom was canning over 100 quarts a year she would start around 50 plants to get 30 in the garden. She really liked Spegetti sauce with cherry tomatoes in it.
Reply:Yes.
Reply:easily?...no..can they be ? yes, but they can be picky about light, heat, and moisture. small portable greenhouses, growlights and soil heaters will improve your chances...much easier and more reliable results buying plant starts at the nursery in the spring...
Reply:Yes you can start your seeds indoors, I use to use my empty egg cartons, instead of buying the starter containers. If more than one plant come up, just keep them pulled out until you have the better plant left. Keep them close to light so they will not stretch, do'nt plant them to early [unless you have grow lights] or you will end up with leggy tomatoe plants. Good Luck!!!
Reply:yes if you get a grow lamp. They have them cheap on ebay. Here's a direct link
Reply:yes
Reply:I use to start tomatoes from seed indoors all the time. Michigan has a short season and it is the best way to get a head start. However, recently I have had terrible luck with seeds and don't know why. Good luck.
Reply:They're pretty easy to get going. you could lay them out on a paper towel and cover with a damp paper towel. After they germinate, transplant to pots with potting soil.

Otherwise, start with seed in a pot with soil, and water, keeping it damp until it emerges. Once the temps warm up outside, transplant outdoors.

Good luck
Reply:Yes, but you must make sure that they are getting plenty of UV rays, artificial sun or real. And then when the weather stabilizes, transplant them outside.
