I live in CA and I want to send tomato plants to WA by mail how can I do this without killing the plants?

Water plants thoroughly the night before.

In the a.m., take them out of the pots and wrap the root ball with damp paper towel. Wrap a layer or two of newspaper around the paper towel, tape or rubber band it so it stays put.

Place it in a sturdy cardboard box and stuff with crumpled newspaper so that the plants remain flat during shipping. You want the newspaper to be a little tight when you close the box because it will hold the plant in place. Find a box that is nearly the size of the plants so that it minimizes shaking and moving about during transit.

Send off. You can send via priority mail with USPS and it will arrrive in 2 days. Or you can pay more and send via Fed-Ex Saver (this should arrive in 2 days) or Fed-Ex Ground (but ask how long it generally takes). UPS has similar shipping times. If you know the size and weight of the box, you can look online for rates. You want to mail out on Monday and choose a method that arrives in 2 days. (I just did a comparison the other day and USPS priority mail was cheapest.)

Good luck.

Before you send it, make sure it's OK to do that. Believe it or not, you can't just take any fruit or plants into other states. I wanted to give some Apples to the friends from CA(I'm in Pacific NW), but they said that they may not be able to bring it in to CA. I didn't know! (They drove from CA.) I don't know about Tomatoes, so you should ask. It might be fine, but you never know. I only know that even some mail order plants co. have a list of states of which they can't mail certain plants.
Reply:Booboo has some good advice for you. A plastic bag over the roots will maintain moisture. I would like to recommend that you do a bit of research and make sure there are no quarantines in either state. I am pretty sure the plants at least have to be bare root to avoid nematodes and the package has to be labeled with exact contents.
Reply:If anyone can do it, UPS or FedEx can. Call them on the phone and ask if they can, about packaging etc. If you don't mind them being Dead or broken, then send by U.S. Postal Service.......guaranteed they will mess them up, if they accept them at all.
