My tomato plants are in 5 gallon pots. how often should they be watered so that I do not get bottom rot?

We have tomatoes growing in a variety of containers. We water those in the five gallon buckets every day with 1/2 gallon of water. We always water in stages. Instead of just dumping a 1/2 gallon of water on the plant, we pour 1/2 the amount on each plant at a time so that the first watering moistens the soil and the second watering will be absorbed more easily into the soil. Otherwise a lot of the water will just run off. We've been watering them daily since we have had very little rain in the last month or so.

We just picked our first ripe tomato with no sign of blossom end rot from one of our plants in a 5 gallon pail.

water every day or every few especially when the soil is dry "and it will dry a lot faster in a bucket"

bottom rot aka "blossom end rot" is from lack of calcium

fertilize if your soil needs it
Reply:Make sure there are holes in the bottom of the pots and the water comes through.
Reply:To prevent blossom end rot, tomato's should be watered every other day in hot weather and fertilized with a tomato fertilizer high in potash and potassium.
