The local nursery said I should water once a week because my tomatoes devoloped a disease on the bottom and said I was over watering them

The nursery is right. Bottom rot is caused from over watering.


Water them often enough to keep the soil moist. If this requires more than once a week then do it. If you have low humidity, the water will evaporate faster. Use some mulch around the plants. That will help keep the moisture in. I use the clippings from my lawn. Works great and is "cheap".

Reply:Blossom end rot is likely the culprit of your tomato problem. The lack of magnesium from the leaching of water causes this development.





I add a tablespoon of Epsom salts to the soil, careful to avoid contact with the stem, and work it into the soil.


Water twice a week with the equivalent of 1-inch of rain, preferably with a soaker hose, about 20-30 minutes at a time. The fruits of the tomato do not get "pithy" from too much water and will develop a good flavor.


A low, nitrogen- based fertilizer once a month will help also. Too much nitrogen ( the first number of the 5-10-10 formula) and you will develop an abundance of leaves.
